The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union vice-president for administration and finance, Savenaca Muamua, has expressed firm support for the recent administrative changes to the Vodafone Deans and Weet-Bix Raluve competitions, stating that these adjustments were necessary to align with World Rugby’s requirements. During a press conference held at the Fiji Rugby Union, he emphasized the significance of having the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) sanction these competitions, as they are crucial for nurturing Fiji’s rugby talent.
Muamua explained that the interim committee, which is presently overseeing the administration of the Deans competition, was appointed by World Rugby and Oceania Rugby. This committee is currently reviewing the terms of participation and making necessary updates, including revisions to the constitution. He concluded that this initiative aims to enhance the structure of the competition, ensuring it reaches every corner of Fiji, including remote schools and those in Vanua Levu.
The interim committee is composed of notable figures, including Timoci Bure, the deputy Permanent Secretary for Education, and education officials like Taniela Domoni. FSSRU representatives on the committee include Muamua, with support from Colati and secretary Navitalai Waiwalu. Additionally, the committee incorporates voices from the Fiji Rakavi sector, with appointments such as women’s director Cathy Wong and national development manager Lionel Sanford.
The collective efforts reflect a commitment to improving governance and operational transparency within Fiji’s school rugby ecosystem, suggesting a more robust framework for fostering promising young talent across the nation. As the changes take shape, there is a renewed sense of optimism for the future of rugby in Fiji, with hopes that these reforms will positively impact the sport and its players.
