Fiji Rugby has announced the appointment of Ioan Cunningham, the former head coach of the Wales Women’s rugby team, as the new head coach for the Vodafone Fijiana XV. This change comes after the resignation of Mosese Rauluni, who stepped down following the team’s struggle in the WXV 3 tournament where they placed fourth.

Cunningham, who brings a rich coaching pedigree, previously led the Welsh women’s and U20 teams in prestigious tournaments. Notable accomplishments during his tenure include securing Wales’ inaugural victory over Australia and achieving a third-place finish in the Six Nations. His experience as Forwards Coach at Scarlets further emphasizes his strategic skill set, having contributed to success in both the European Challenge Cup and the Heineken Champions Cup.

As the Fijiana prepares to face off against robust Northern Hemisphere teams, Cunningham’s understanding of their playing styles and his innovative approach to game plans are anticipated to bolster the team’s competitiveness. Cunningham expressed his excitement for the new role, highlighting the immense potential within the squad and his eagerness to unlock their talent.

Fiji Rugby CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu has expressed optimism regarding Cunningham’s appointment, noting his extensive international experience as vital for guiding the Fijiana towards success in the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup, scheduled from August 22 to September 27 in England. The Fijiana XV will find themselves in Pool B, competing against strong teams like Canada, Scotland, and Wales.

This coaching transition symbolizes a bright new era for the Fijiana XV, offering the possibility of building on past experiences and striving for success on the global rugby stage. With Cunningham at the helm, the team is poised to harness their potential and aim for a significant showing at the World Cup, potentially highlighting the depth of talent within Fiji’s women’s rugby landscape. The anticipation for this tournament suggests a hopeful outlook for the team’s future.
