Fiji Rugby has officially launched the Na Soko tournament, a pioneering women’s rugby franchise competition slated to begin this Friday at Lawaqa Park. This initiative aims to enhance the gap between grassroots provincial rugby and elite levels, specifically supporting the aspirations of the Vodafone Fijiana XV as they prepare for the upcoming Women’s Rugby World Cup.

Tournament Director Jiko Matawalu remarked that Na Soko represents an advancement from existing competitions like the Ranadi and Marama Cups, aiming to elevate player performance closer to professional standards akin to Super Rugby. He emphasized the importance of providing players with opportunities to showcase their talents at a higher level, which could influence team selection for international play.

The tournament will feature players from 36 unions, divided into four teams: Camakau, Bilibili, Kaunitoni, and Takia, creating a competitive landscape that reflects Fiji’s diverse talent. The initial matches will see Kaunitoni face Takia at 4 PM, followed by a match between Camakau and Bilibili at 6 PM.

Alana Thomas, the Women’s High-Performance Manager at Fiji Rugby, expressed optimism regarding the tournament, noting it provides necessary match exposure for players not currently on the Fijiana roster. This aligns with previous initiatives aimed at enhancing women’s rugby participation in Fiji, demonstrating a growing commitment to inclusivity and competitive opportunities that empower female athletes.

As Fiji Rugby continues to strive for equity in sport, Na Soko fosters hope and resilience, paving the way for a brighter future for women’s rugby in the nation. The support from local fans and communities will be vital in sustaining this momentum and celebrating the achievements of female athletes on and off the field.

With the tournament kicking off soon, there is an air of excitement surrounding the potential breakthroughs for players and the broader movement towards inclusivity in sports, enhancing opportunities for the women athletes of Fiji.
