Fiji Rugby is embarking on an extensive review of its sevens programs, focusing on both the men’s and women’s teams. The initiative aims not only to prepare these teams for the upcoming Olympic Games but also to establish a long-term strategy that aligns with the evolving dynamics of global sevens rugby. Interim CEO Koli Sewabu has highlighted that this effort is just the first step in a broader plan to shape the future of Fiji’s sevens rugby.
“We just completed our 7s review last week, that’s for both the men’s and the women’s program. That’s the first part of our review process,” Sewabu explained, stressing that while the immediate focus includes preparations for the next Olympic cycle, the vision extends to future competitions, including those in 2032.
The upcoming appointment of Naca Cawanibuka as the General Manager of High Performance is set to play a crucial role in the next phase of this review. His expertise will guide deeper evaluations and structural improvements aimed at enhancing performance levels. The strategic plan will emphasize critical areas like effective coaching, contracted player pathways, and consistent preparations for significant tournaments.
This comprehensive approach follows a recent positive trend for the men’s team, which has seen a resurgence in performance during the 2024-2025 HSBC Sevens Series, culminating in a title win at the Dubai 7s and a third-place finish in Cape Town. This improving trajectory reflects a broader commitment within Fiji Rugby to blend tradition and innovation in its development strategies.
The long-term vision for Fiji Rugby encompasses hosting a national sevens symposium, intending to unite various stakeholders and outline a collaborative path forward that prioritizes excellence in the sport. This initiative embodies hope and a collective aspiration to uplift Fiji’s rugby stature on both national and international stages.
With the passion and rich heritage of rugby in Fiji, this new strategic direction holds promise for developing stronger, well-prepared teams that can continue to inspire future generations and produce excellent performances on the world stage. There is excitement and optimism among fans and stakeholders, who are eager to see the results of this comprehensive overhaul in the upcoming competitions.
