The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is set to develop a comprehensive business strategy aimed at elevating the Flying Fijians national team toward achieving a Rugby World Cup title. John Sanday, chairman of the Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), shared insights during an interview featured in the latest edition of FijiNIKUA magazine. FRFUL serves as the operational entity of the Fiji Rugby Union.

Sanday acknowledged Fiji’s abundant talent, noting that the national XV team has reached the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup three times despite limited resources. Drawing on his experience as a former player who participated in Fiji’s first quarterfinal appearance, he highlighted the team’s determination and passion for their country.

“Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” Sanday stated during the magazine’s launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva. He emphasized the need to transition from relying on minimal resources to establishing a sturdy financial foundation for future success.

Stabilizing the finances of the FRU, enhancing governance structures, and increasing revenue streams will be priority areas for Sanday. He mentioned plans to form board sub-committees dedicated to executing specific projects, with announcements expected in early 2025.

Additionally, Sanday recognized the importance of establishing a rugby players’ association, which would advocate for player interests, thereby improving overall outcomes. The association will also have representation on the FRU board, ensuring player perspectives are considered in decision-making processes.

Furthermore, the board intends to assess the current staff and organizational structure of the FRU to ensure it aligns with the evolving dynamics of global rugby, with the aim of positioning Fiji Rugby within the elite tier.

The vision laid out by Sanday offers a hopeful perspective for the future of rugby in Fiji, emphasizing systematic growth and collaboration that could ultimately lead to success on the world stage.

In summary, the FRU is preparing to implement a strategic approach focused on financial stability, governance improvement, and player engagement to enhance its competitiveness in international rugby. This proactive plan illustrates a commitment to not only nurturing talent but also creating a sustainable model for success, with an eye toward achieving the coveted Rugby World Cup title.
