The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to develop a comprehensive business plan aimed at positioning the Flying Fijians to secure a Rugby World Cup title. In an interview with FijiNikua magazine, Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL) chairman John Sanday emphasized the need for a strategic approach now that the national team has demonstrated remarkable talent by reaching three Rugby World Cup quarterfinals with limited resources.

Sanday, who was part of the first Flying Fijians squad to enter a World Cup quarterfinal, reflected on the team’s legacy built on talent, fitness, grit, and a deep love for their country. He reiterated the primary goal: to clinch the Rugby World Cup. To achieve this, he stressed the importance of transitioning from a reliance on minimal resources to establishing a robust business foundation that would support the team in its pursuit of glory.

The chairman outlined critical objectives for stabilizing the FRU’s finances, enhancing governance, and developing a work agenda to increase revenue streams. “It’s about going back to basics from a corporate perspective,” he noted.

To support these efforts, Sanday announced that sub-committees will be formed to focus on specific projects, with an announcement expected in early 2025. He also acknowledged the necessity of forming a rugby players’ association that would advocate for players’ interests within the FRU, aiming for improved outcomes in player welfare and engagement.

“We anticipate that a Fiji Rugby Players Association will emerge, with provisions for its nominee to join the board,” he said. Additionally, the board plans to review the current staff and structure of the FRU to ensure alignment with global rugby changes and the skills needed to elevate Fiji Rugby to tier one status.

This strategic pivot could mark a new chapter for Fijian rugby, building on an already proud legacy while moving towards a sustainable and successful future. The aim is not only to capture a World Cup but also to create an environment where Fijian talent can thrive consistently on the world stage.

This ambitious plan reflects a hopeful vision for the future of rugby in Fiji, where dedication and strategic growth could lead to impressive achievements on the global rugby stage.
