The Fiji Rugby Union is adopting a comprehensive strategy for its sevens programs as it prepares for the upcoming Olympic Games and the HSBC World SVNS Series. Acting Chief Executive Officer Koli Sewabu announced that the initial phase of a review for both the men’s and women’s teams was concluded last week, setting the groundwork for future improvements.
Upcoming changes to the World 7s Series next season will be a focal point of the second part of this review, scheduled for next week. Sewabu emphasized the importance of understanding the new format while developing plans to effectively address future challenges, particularly with regard to the next two Olympic Games in 2028 and 2032 in Brisbane, Australia.
“We’re not just looking to the next Olympics; we’re also considering long-term strategies to build a culture of excellence within our organization,” Sewabu noted. Plans may include convening a symposium to engage stakeholders and cement a strategic framework aimed at enhancing coaching standards and athlete preparation.
This initiative follows a successful season in which the Fiji Airways men’s 7s team finished second in the series with 96 points, while the Fijiana 7s team placed seventh with 46 points. The men’s team’s recent performance, alongside the women’s promising trajectory, illustrates the potential for both squads to elevate Fiji’s rugby stature.
Fiji Rugby’s commitment to excellence and the collaboration among stakeholders create a hopeful outlook for the sevens program, inspiring future generations and promising exciting developments on the international rugby stage. The anticipation surrounding these reforms is expected to foster a renewed sense of energy and determination, vital for the teams as they embark on their upcoming challenges.
