The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is actively engaged in discussions regarding the acquisition of land and the potential construction of a stadium, a project driven by the ongoing issue of insufficient sports facilities in the country. FRU Board chairman John Sanday revealed that negotiations are underway with landowners in Lauwaki, Vuda, as well as the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB). Although these talks are currently on hold while the FRU undergoes a restructuring process, Sanday expressed optimism about the progress made so far.
“We need to set up our team, and once that is in place, they will drive the project forward,” said Sanday, highlighting that both the TLTB and landowners are on board and awaiting the submission of an application form to initiate the process. He mentioned that the FRU is evaluating four proposals for the stadium project, emphasizing the need to carefully assess financial implications.
To finance the envisioned stadium, the FRU is exploring various avenues. Sanday noted anticipated revenue from the upcoming Rugby Nations Championship, alongside efforts to identify budgetary savings within the organization. The FRU is also in discussions with banks, impact agencies, and governmental bodies to secure funding. Furthermore, they are considering a crowdfunding initiative to engage the Fijian public and gather support, stressing the importance of building trust and sharing their vision for the future.
In addition, FRU CEO Koli Sewabu mentioned that conversations with the Fiji Sports Council are ongoing to ensure scheduling accommodations for rugby games in the forthcoming months. This proactive approach reflects the FRU’s commitment to enhancing the infrastructure of rugby and supporting local sports initiatives, fostering a stronger sporting culture in Fiji.
