The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has announced the release of funds to kick off the 2025 Vodafone Deans and Weet-Bix Raluve competition, enabling zone and sub-zone matches to commence this week. Koli Sewabu, Interim CEO of the FRU, emphasized the organization’s dedication to facilitating the prestigious secondary school rugby tournament and is collaborating closely with the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU) to ensure seamless operations.

“We are releasing funds to the Fiji Secondary School today so that they can distribute it to the zones and subzones for the competition to get started this week,” Sewabu stated, highlighting the timing of this financial support as crucial since the tournament officially launches on Saturday.

The FRU’s involvement is expected to enhance participation and elevate the competitive standards of the tournament, which serves as a significant pathway for aspiring young rugby players in Fiji. With additional planning underway to discuss long-term support for school rugby development in the national budget, there is palpable excitement within schools and communities as they look forward to a fruitful season.

This announcement aligns with previous concerns regarding the administrative and governance structure of school rugby, which the FRU has actively worked to improve. Stakeholders and schools are eager to see how these changes will encourage a thriving environment for youth rugby and foster community spirit while nurturing the next generation of athletes.

The emphasis on a structured, well-supported competition illustrates the FRU’s commitment to both immediate and future growth in Fiji’s rugby landscape, providing hope and optimism for young players eager to make their mark on the sport.
