Koli Sewabu has been officially appointed as the new chief executive officer of Fiji Rugby Union, concluding six months of service in an acting capacity. His appointment marks a crucial step towards rebuilding trust among the rugby community, stakeholders, and fans, which he identifies as his foremost objective.

Taking over the leadership of Rugby House, Sewabu faces the challenge of navigating the union through evolving expectations as a Tier One nation in rugby. He carries forth a legacy established by previous CEOs while implementing necessary changes to enhance the organization.

Expressing gratitude for his new role, Sewabu emphasized the importance of regaining trust within the rugby public and among stakeholders. “There’s a lot to do as rugby matters to everyone. We know that we have a lot of gaps, a lot of trust to build,” he stated. Sewabu and his team plan to focus on earning that trust and adequately serving the rugby community over the coming years.

During his tenure as acting CEO, Sewabu demonstrated exceptional leadership and a keen understanding of the challenges facing Fiji Rugby. His efforts during this period earned him considerable respect, as noted by Fiji Rugby Union Board chairman John Sanday, who stated that his leadership reflects the board’s confidence in Sewabu’s potential to advance the organization. As CEO, he aims to fortify governance, secure financial sustainability, support national teams, and promote rugby at all levels across the nation.

Sewabu’s selection as CEO was made from a pool of candidates that included prominent figures such as Hong Kong’s Director of Rugby Operations, Andrew Durutalo. This marks a significant moment for Fiji Rugby, signaling a commitment to progress and the promotion of the sport within the country. The future looks promising as Sewabu takes the helm in this pivotal role.
