The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is making significant strides in its efforts to secure funding aimed at advancing the sport in Fiji and potentially hosting major international rugby events, such as the HSBC SVNS Series or even a Rugby World Cup match. This was highlighted by FRU director Rugby Koli Sewabu during the Leaders Lead Symposium at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau.

Sewabu, a former Flying Fijians No.8, shared insights from recent negotiations with World Rugby and the Australian government through its Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). He emphasized that these discussions center around establishing legacy funds specific to the Pacific region, which could take Fiji Rugby to unprecedented heights in its long history.

While specific financial details remain undisclosed, Sewabu emphasized the importance of sufficient infrastructure, revealing that an international-standard stadium with a minimum capacity of 25,000 spectators is essential. He articulated the ongoing goals to improve rugby infrastructure and development programs, which will enable Fiji to host more international matches in the future.

These efforts align with earlier statements by Fiji Rugby Union CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu and Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, both of whom have stressed the necessity for infrastructure enhancements, including expanding the HFC Bank Stadium’s capacity from 15,000 to 25,000 by 2026.

Sewabu pointed out that while negotiations are still in their initial phase, the aim is to position Fiji Rugby for a more prominent place in the global rugby landscape. As discussions progress, he is hopeful that with a clear path ahead, Fiji can host a variety of high-profile international rugby events that will not only celebrate the nation’s rich rugby culture but also boost local tourism and engagement in the sport.

This proactive stance on securing funding and improving infrastructure reflects a commitment to developing rugby in Fiji and envisioning a brighter future filled with exciting opportunities for fans and players alike. The overarching aim is a collective ambition to see Fiji not only participate in but thrive within the global rugby community, potentially paving the way for future success on the world stage.
