The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) faces ongoing challenges related to the availability of standard playing grounds as they prepare for their upcoming domestic competitions. The lack of accessible facilities prompted a strategic decision to push the start of the domestic rugby calendar to August.

Sale Sorovaki, the FRU’s General Manager of Operations and Development, emphasized the need for early planning regarding ground bookings, explaining that previous events, like Super Rugby and the Deans competition, heavily impacted ground availability. To maximize the use of existing facilities, the FRU adjusted its competition schedule to ensure there are grounds available for play.

“This issue is a good problem to have,” Sorovaki noted, hinting at the growing interest in rugby across Fiji. He encouraged unions to collaborate actively to secure suitable land for rugby grounds, showcasing the community’s involvement in the sport.

With just a week until the first matches of the Skipper Cup and Marama Championship commence, the focus is also on compliance and player welfare, which Sorovaki underscored as crucial regardless of competition tier, from grassroots to elite levels. He acknowledged the logistical complexities of managing over 40 games nationwide, highlighting a commitment to player safety.

The FRU is set to kick off the Skipper and Marama Championship this Saturday, with additional competitions like the Ranadi and Vanua set to start on September 5. The Union’s efforts to reorganize and adapt amidst challenges reflect resilience and a positive outlook for the upcoming season.

Advancing from previous reports where the FRU announced changes aimed at enhancing competition structures, such as the integration of challenges into regular season play and a new condensed competition format, these initiatives underscore a collective goal: to nurture talent and foster a vibrant rugby culture in Fiji. The union’s adaptability amidst logistical challenges is indicative of a promising future for the sport, ensuring a space for players at all levels to thrive.
