Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians halfback Peni Matawalu is currently under police investigation following allegations of domestic violence involving his wife. The police confirmed that an assault complaint was filed last month, citing that Matawalu’s actions led to his wife’s hospitalization.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro addressed the incident, stating, “We can confirm an alleged case of assault that is under investigation. Investigators are currently awaiting the medical report.” As a result of the ongoing investigation, Matawalu was benched and did not participate in the Drua’s recent Super Rugby Pacific matches against the Highlanders and NSW Waratahs.

This situation echoes the recent case of Vinaya Habosi, a winger for Racing 92, who faced similar allegations, resulting in his arrest following a violent incident with his partner. Habosi had previously been involved in domestic violence allegations that led to his contract termination with the Fijian Drua last year. Such incidents highlight a troubling trend within the realm of professional sports regarding domestic violence, which has prompted discussions about accountability and the behavior of athletes both on and off the field.

It’s hoped that these incidents can lead to broader conversations about domestic violence prevention and the need for support systems for victims. Moving forward, it’s crucial for sport organizations to have clear protocols in place to ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
