The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is scheduled to announce new head coaches for both the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week, as confirmed by FRU CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. The organization has extended offers to several interested candidates and is currently awaiting their acceptance. Among the notable applicants is Waisale Serevi, a legendary figure in sevens rugby and former coach of the Indian Women’s 7s team. Additionally, former player Sireli Bobo has been mentioned as a potential candidate for one of the positions, while Nayacalevu withheld the names of other applicants.

Serevi will be joining the Fiji Sports Council coaching team to assist in preparing the Under-20 7s squad. This collaboration reflects a commitment to developing young talent in Fijian rugby. Recently, Serevi was also appointed as the International Brand Ambassador for Aqua Pacific Natural Artesian Water, amplifying his presence within the sports community.

The need for new head coaches arises following the exit of Mosese Rauluni from the Fijiana 15s position last October. Rauluni had an impactful tenure, leading the team to several successes, including a remarkable victory in the Oceania Championship and securing a spot in the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His successor will face the challenge of upholding this legacy.

In parallel, the Fijiana 7s coaching role became vacant when Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed in December 2023 after a successful five-year run, highlighted by the team’s achievement of winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Nayacalevu has stressed the importance of selecting the best candidates to elevate the teams’ performances. This leadership change presents an opportunity for innovation and growth in Fijian women’s rugby, invigorating prospects for future competitions.

The announcements are met with optimism, signaling a positive transition for women’s rugby in Fiji. The FRU’s focus on nurturing talent, alongside experienced mentorship, is a hopeful indication of a promising future in international rugby. This concerted effort to develop both senior teams and youth talent is essential for maintaining Fiji’s competitive edge on a global level.
