The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union (FSSRU) is navigating significant changes regarding venues for this year’s Vodafone Deans Rugby Championship final. While discussions are ongoing with the Fiji Sports Council, no confirmed location has been finalized yet. FSSRU Vice President for Development, Biu Colati, emphasized that they are working diligently to secure an appropriate venue among the council’s top grounds.
This year has already posed unique logistical challenges, as the national quarter-finals are set to take place across two venues—Prince Charles Park in Nadi and Churchill Park in Lautoka—marking a first in the tournament’s history. Traditionally, the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva serves as the trusted venue for these quarter-finals. However, the unavailability of the stadium this year required the Union to swiftly adapt.
Colati mentioned that Nadi was initially selected for its facilities, but with only three fields available, it was insufficient for the needs of the quarter-finals, prompting the addition of Churchill Park to cater to warm-up requirements for the teams. He reassured stakeholders that despite the unforeseen difficulties, the welfare of the 1,920 student-athletes and officials involved is paramount.
In a creative effort to support families during this time, the FSSRU is also considering a shared ticketing option for parents who might have to travel between the split venues. If a parent buys a ticket for $10 at one venue, they could present it at the other and receive a discounted price.
With the semi-finals confirmed to take place at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka next weekend, Colati expressed gratitude to Nadroga for their ongoing hospitality. This proactive approach underscores the FSSRU’s commitment to youth rugby, as they strive to create an inclusive and supportive environment for young athletes despite logistical challenges.
Overall, these developments signal a resilience within the FSSRU and a continued dedication to fostering sporting opportunities for the youth, encouraging community engagement and passion for rugby across Fiji.
