Fiji is embracing a technological transformation in its public health system with the introduction of advanced AI-equipped X-ray machines in hospitals across the nation. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, marks a significant shift away from outdated analog X-ray units, some of which have been in use for over 15 years.
The procurement process has successfully secured a total of 18 cutting-edge digital X-ray machines through a public tender, provided by a prominent Chinese manufacturer. These new machines boast capabilities that not only enhance the speed and clarity of imaging but also integrate Artificial Intelligence software that aids medical professionals in identifying potential abnormalities. This innovation is set to expedite diagnostics and bolster clinical decision-making.
Already, installations of these digital systems have been completed at major facilities, including the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, as well as in Nausori and Taveuni. Plans are underway to extend the deployment of the remaining units to key divisional and subdivisional hospitals, along with select rural health centers.
Health officials emphasize that the adoption of this advanced technology is poised to reduce waiting times significantly, improve the quality of medical imaging, and enhance patient care. Furthermore, it is expected to provide a more equitable distribution of modern diagnostic services throughout Fiji’s healthcare landscape, ensuring that all citizens have access to vital health resources.
This significant upgrade reflects a commitment to improving healthcare in Fiji, heralding a new era of medical diagnostics that promises to benefit both patients and healthcare providers alike.
