Patients in Rewa, Nakasi, Makoi, Korovou, and Naitasiri can now benefit from faster and more accurate diagnostic services thanks to the introduction of a cutting-edge digital radiology machine at Nausori Health Centre. This new $200,000 system replaces outdated analogue equipment that dates back to 1997, significantly reducing travel time and delays for families in the region.
Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, emphasized that the upgrade includes advanced AI software aimed at assisting clinicians in making faster and more precise diagnoses. This advancement will diminish the necessity for patients to commute to Suva for diagnostic scans, facilitating more accessible healthcare.
“This is more than just new equipment; it is a commitment to timely, comprehensive care for our communities,” said Dr. Lalabalavu, highlighting the strategic importance of the new technology.
The installation at Nausori serves as a blueprint for a national initiative, with plans to implement similar digital radiology systems at 21 key locations across the country, including CWM Hospital, Taveuni, and Sigatoka.
Senior Biomedical Engineer Ratu Seci Takotavuki noted that the new machines will eliminate the need for manual film processing, leading to improved image clarity and enhanced diagnostic efficiency, thereby strengthening patient care throughout Fiji. This progressive move underscores a commitment to improving healthcare standards and ensuring timely access to essential medical services for all citizens.
