The Ministry of Education in Fiji has announced the reinstatement of interviews for Year 13 students who wish to pursue careers in teaching. This effort, which involves collaboration with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), aims to improve the quality of teacher recruitment and training throughout the country.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro underscored the significance of a thorough selection process designed to attract dedicated and qualified candidates into the teaching profession. This initiative is part of the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which seeks to fortify partnerships among educational stakeholders and the Ministry of Education. The declaration’s goal is to ensure that graduates possess the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes to excel in classrooms across Fiji.

Eligible students have the opportunity to apply for scholarships under the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme. These scholarships will support various Bachelor of Education programs, including specialized fields like Early Childhood Education, Counseling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for submitting online applications to the TSLS is January 31, 2025. Successful candidates will be informed about their interview dates and locations through email and phone notifications.

This initiative is a promising development in the education sector, as it emphasizes the importance of quality teaching and the commitment to fostering a new generation of educators who will shape the future of Fiji’s classrooms. By investing in teacher training and selection processes, the Ministry of Education is taking a proactive approach to enhance the educational landscape of the nation.
