The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has decided to suspend the implementation of its announced 2026 electricity tariff rate, which was set to take effect this Thursday. Instead, the Commission will initiate a 21-day consultation period inviting feedback from a wide array of stakeholders, including consumer advocacy groups, domestic businesses, industries, government departments, political parties, social groups, and youth representatives.
In a recent statement, the FCCC highlighted that it would welcome comments from all interested parties. This decision comes after the agency announced new electricity tariff rates earlier this month following its assessment and evaluation of the proposal submitted by Energy Fiji Limited. The Commission asserted that its determination concerning the new rates was made in full compliance with regulatory requirements and processes.
The mixed public reaction and heightened interest following the initial announcement have prompted the FCCC to engage further with the community. The Commission plans to publish the non-confidential version of Energy Fiji Limited’s submission from May 2025 on its website, along with the Electricity Tariff Methodology, to enhance transparency.
FCCC encourages every consumer, trader, and Fijian citizen concerned about the new rates to participate in the consultation process. Submissions can be made online or in writing, allowing the public ample opportunities to express their views. The Commission has emphasized its independence from external influences, ensuring that all regulatory decisions are made based on due evidence, established protocol, and in the interest of both consumers and the broader Fijian economy.
Details about the consultation process will be communicated in due course, highlighting the FCCC’s commitment to involving the community in decisions that directly affect them. This proactive approach signifies a positive step towards enhanced dialogue and engagement between the Commission and the public.
