The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has decided to suspend the implementation of new electricity tariff rates that were slated to take effect on January 1, 2026. This postponement is to facilitate a 21-day public consultation period, responding to what the FCCC describes as “mixed feedback” from the public regarding the tariff structure introduced on December 19, following an assessment of Energy Fiji Limited’s (EFL) proposal.
This suspension opens the floor for contributions from a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including households, businesses, consumer groups, industry representatives, government agencies, political entities, and youth organizations. The FCCC encourages all Fijian citizens to participate and submit their views.
To enhance transparency, the commission will publish a non-confidential version of EFL’s submission from May 2025 on its website, alongside the Electricity Tariff Methodology. Consumers and traders, as well as any interested citizens, are invited to make their submissions either online or through written communication. In addition, the FCCC will directly engage with stakeholders to ensure comprehensive feedback.
FCCC has emphasized its commitment to operating independently and making regulatory decisions grounded in evidence, due process, and considerations for the long-term interests of both consumers and the Fijian economy. Further details regarding the consultation process are expected to be announced soon.
This proactive approach by the FCCC reflects a dedication to fostering public engagement and ensuring that the new tariff rates are aligned with the needs and perspectives of the Fijian community, paving the way for a more inclusive decision-making process.
