Fiji’s referendum bill is currently under scrutiny, with calls for significant adjustments from various stakeholders. Suva lawyer Richard Naidu has voiced strong opposition to the proposal to adopt the Singapore model from 1961, emphasizing that such a restrictive approach would be unsuitable for Fiji, which enjoys greater freedom of expression compared to Singapore and other nations.

Naidu’s concerns extend beyond the referendum bill itself, as he highlighted the need for a comprehensive review of the general elections process in Fiji to ensure it is fair and garners public trust. There has been a mixed response to the referendum proposal: while some submissions advocate for modifications to specific clauses, others have rallied in support, contingent upon the assurance that the referendum will unfold in a democratic, transparent, and inclusive manner.

Faith Grace, a representative from Stand With Niko Advocacy, reiterated the importance of public input, insisting that the decision-making process must reflect the desires of the people. She also called for enhanced inclusivity in the submission process, recommending online options to facilitate broader participation.

Conversely, the Fiji Council of Social Services has expressed opposition to specific clauses in the bill, particularly Clauses 22 and 23, which impose restrictions on public campaigning, displays, and voter persuasion, as well as introducing provisions for warrantless arrests and penalties.

Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Justice and Law, has urged the public to engage in the consultation process, deeming this period crucial before the bill is presented in Parliament for approval.

The ongoing discussions surrounding the referendum bill encapsulate a pivotal moment for Fiji’s democratic processes and civic engagement, with hopes for an outcome that genuinely reflects the voice of the citizens.
