The Fiji Red Cross Society is actively calling upon communities, especially in the Western Division, to take essential precautions in response to the heightened risk of climate-sensitive diseases, following recent flooding. With floodwaters now receding, the focus has shifted to preventing diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea, which often rise after such environmental events.

Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of community vigilance, stating, “While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high.” She urged residents to adopt simple yet crucial practices to protect themselves and their loved ones.

In the past three days, the Fiji Red Cross assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in evacuation centres and nearby communities. They have distributed vital resources such as Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets to help those affected.

The organization continues to monitor the situation closely and extend support where necessary, particularly in identified hotspot areas for diseases in the Western Division. Residents are urged to be cautious and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue arise, as timely treatment can be life-saving.

Director General Dawai also expressed gratitude towards Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of clean water for the affected families, highlighting its significance in aiding recovery efforts. She acknowledged the support from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, noting that strong collaborations are vital in times of crisis.

By fostering community awareness and preparedness, the Fiji Red Cross Society aims to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and facilitate smoother recovery for those impacted by the floods.

This article underscores the resilience of communities in the face of adversity and emphasizes the importance of collective action in addressing health risks following natural disasters. By remaining vigilant and taking preventive measures, communities can work together to safeguard public health and support one another through these challenging times.
