The Fiji Red Cross Society is urging communities, especially in the Western Division, to take urgent action to protect themselves from a rise in climate-sensitive diseases following the recent flooding in Fiji. As floodwaters start to recede, concerns grow about potential outbreaks of diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea, commonly associated with such conditions.

Ragigia Dawai, Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized that while the immediate threat of flooding may be diminishing, the risk of disease remains critically high. She urged residents to engage in simple yet essential preventive measures to safeguard their health and well-being.

In response to the situation, the Fiji Red Cross has conducted assessments of 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in the Western Division, both in evacuation centers and local communities. They have distributed Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets to support those affected.

The organization continues to monitor the situation closely and offers ongoing support to communities in need. Certain areas within the Western Division are identified as hotspots for LTDD, heightening the need for continued vigilance and preventive health measures among residents.

The Fiji Red Cross advises anyone experiencing symptoms of these diseases—such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue—to seek medical attention without delay, underlining that prompt treatment can be life-saving.

Additionally, Ms. Dawai expressed sincere gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of water to affected families, highlighting that access to clean drinking water is vital for community recovery. The Fiji Red Cross also thanked the National Disaster Management Office and other partners for their collaboration, emphasizing the importance of strong partnerships in disaster response.

In conclusion, the continued efforts of the Fiji Red Cross symbolize resilience and hope for the affected communities. Their proactive measures to prevent disease outbreaks while offering critical support during this challenging time reflect a commitment to health and healing.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of community vigilance, collaboration, and support, ensuring a brighter path toward recovery for all those impacted.
