Fiji President Elizabeth Fong has reiterated the urgent need for reforms to enhance accessibility in public transportation, highlighting ongoing challenges that critically affect vulnerable citizens. Despite persistent advocacy and direct dialogues with relevant authorities, many people, particularly the elderly and individuals with disabilities, continue to face obstacles in accessing public transport.
Fong specifically pointed out that current bus designs are inadequate for individuals with mobility challenges. She stated, “Look at our buses, the steps are this narrow, and they’re this deep, they’re not even regular size, so a stroke person can’t get in the bus. If you’re in a wheelchair, well, forget it; you just have to taxi.” Such comments underscore the daily struggles faced by stroke survivors and others with mobility impairments who cannot utilize existing transport means.
Vani Catanasiga, Executive Director of the Fiji Council of Social Services, supported these concerns, emphasizing that while inclusive policies exist on paper, they frequently fall short in practical implementation. She noted that issues surrounding disability access in public transport have been longstanding, requiring immediate and concerted efforts to address them. “I think this is a high time that this issue is looked into with some urgency, not only because of people with disabilities but also because of the elderly,” Catanasiga remarked, calling attention to the necessity for the government to actively monitor policy execution.
Stakeholders within the community recognize ongoing discussions regarding disability policies, yet they highlight a significant gap in effective implementation. They advocate for prioritizing accessible public transport as a national imperative, especially as Fiji approaches upcoming elections, where the accessibility of services may become a central political issue.
