Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel has announced the government’s intention to revitalize the cooperative sector in Fiji. Speaking at a regional dialogue on cooperatives in Nadi, he highlighted the necessity for assistance in this area, noting that the cooperative movement had significantly declined prior to the Coalition Government taking office.
Immanuel emphasized that cooperatives currently contribute around 10 percent to the local economy but believes this figure can be much higher. The purpose of the three-day conference is to explore successful cooperative models from countries such as India and Indonesia, which have more advanced cooperative structures.
He is keen to ensure that the outcomes of the Pacific Regional Dialogue on Cooperatives as Drivers of the Blue-Green Economy are not only acknowledged but implemented. Immanuel, who stepped into his role in November 2025, confirmed his commitment to addressing issues raised during the conference, including the need for institutionalizing cooperatives, revising existing laws, modernizing operations, and integrating technology.
This regional dialogue, organized in collaboration with the International Cooperative Alliance Asia and Pacific (ICA-AP) and Fiji’s Department of Cooperative Business, aims to bolster regional cooperation, economic empowerment, food security, and sustainable development across Pacific Island nations. Attendees include senior government officials, cooperative leaders, and various development partners, all gathered at the Tokatoka Resort to discuss impactful solutions for their communities.
The renewed focus on cooperatives aligns with global trends that recognize their potential in enhancing economic resilience and advancing sustainable practices. The positive developments stemming from this dialogue could pave the way for enriching local economies and empowering communities through strengthened cooperative structures.
