A citizen publisher known for sharing confidential information potentially linked to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is set to face charges in court tomorrow. Charlie Charters was apprehended after being stopped at Nadi International Airport, where he was informed of his detention for allegedly aiding and abetting a whistleblower, a violation under Section 45 of the Crimes Act 2009.

In a statement from his attorney, Seforan Fatiaki, Mr. Charters disclosed that he has been held overnight at FICAC’s office in Suva and anticipates questioning later today. He also shared his experience at the airport, where he was reportedly offered a “deal” that would allow him to proceed with his flight to Sydney. However, Mr. Charters rejected the proposal, deeming its terms unacceptable, leading to his arrest.

Despite the serious nature of his situation, Mr. Charters expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he and his family have received, emphasizing that their well-being has been at the forefront of public concern. He also acknowledged the professionalism of the FICAC officers involved in the investigation, highlighting their considerate and attentive manner throughout the process.

The whistleblower case is notable as it revolves around alleged breaches of Section 13G of the FICAC Act, which pertains to the unauthorized disclosure of official information. As this case unfolds, it emphasizes the delicate balance between public interest and the legal ramifications of whistleblowing in Fiji.
