The Fiji Public Trustee Corporation Limited has announced that the legislation governing its operations is in dire need of updates. Chief Executive Ajay Singh highlighted that the Fiji Public Trustee Act 2006 and the Fees Regulations 2008 have become outdated, not accurately reflecting the corporation’s evolving role and responsibilities.

Singh emphasized that a review process has already commenced, which includes collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, the Law Reform Commission, and the corporation’s line ministry. He noted, “Most of the clauses in the Act are now outdated. So the corporation is like, we have just started reviewing the 2006 Fiji Public Trustee Act. The works have begun and currently we are in consultation stages.”

The process is projected to extend over more than a year, as Singh clarified the need for thorough consultation. “We have just started. So we will have to go through the consultation process. I think we are targeting one year, but I think one year is a very short time for review of the Act. Because we started talks last year, and now we have been told to refer this to the Law Reform Commission,” he added.

Updating the legislation is expected to bolster governance and improve efficiency, ensuring that the Public Trustee can effectively protect beneficiary interests while adapting to the current economic and regulatory landscape. This initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing the framework that supports the welfare of beneficiaries, creating a more robust system for those it serves.
