The legal proceedings involving three high-profile individuals accused of violating the 2010 Procurement Regulations are set to begin in 20 days. The case includes former prime minister Voreqe Bainimarama, former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and former health minister Dr. Neil Sharma. A final pretrial conference was held today at the High Court in Suva, presided over by Justice Usaia Ratuvili.
During this conference, it was revealed that the number of prosecution witnesses has been significantly reduced from 40 to 25. The three defendants face serious charges, including abuse of office, obstructing justice, and breach of trust by a public servant related to actions purportedly taken in 2011.
Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Laisani Tabuakuro indicated that an amendment to the charges would be filed, specifically to update the dates of the alleged offense. She noted that while the parties have yet to agree on certain facts of the case, they are prepared to move forward to trial.
The prosecution is being supported by Senior State Lawyer Pooja Mishra. Dr. Sharma is represented by Krisheel Chang from Howards Lawyers, while Bainimarama and Sayed-Khaiyum have legal representation from Gul Fatima of RPatel Lawyers. The case has been adjourned to commence on March 2, with Day One of the trial anticipated to unfold at that time.
This case marks a significant moment in Fiji’s legal landscape, as it underscores the accountability expected of public officials and the ongoing scrutiny of governmental operations.
