The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) is facing a significant challenge with an increase in the amount of contraband being smuggled into its facilities by unknown individuals. The FCS recently reported the confiscation of a large black plastic bag during a routine search at the Naboro facility. This bag contained a touchscreen mobile phone, marijuana, mobile batteries, a type of herbal chew known as suki, and a white powdery substance.

While the FCS is dedicated to treating offenders humanely, it acknowledges that the ongoing activities related to drug smuggling and the influx of contraband undermine their rehabilitation efforts. In light of this troubling situation, the organization has initiated a review of its security measures. One prominent change includes the decision to halt the consumption of cooked food brought in by family members of inmates during this festive season, as contraband is often concealed within these items.

The FCS is appealing to the public for their cooperation during this time, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety and security within correctional facilities.

This situation highlights the ongoing struggle corrections services face in balancing humane treatment with the necessity of security. The proactive measures being taken by the FCS may serve not only to enhance safety but also to reinforce the integrity of rehabilitation programs. With community support and heightened security practices, there is hope that these efforts will reduce the influx of contraband and ultimately aid in the rehabilitation of inmates, paving the way for a safer environment for all involved.
