Two of the four prisoners who escaped from the Suva Corrections Centre have pleaded guilty to charges of escaping lawful custody. Emosi Rokovesu, 23, and Daniel Koroivuki, 24, were among the group and admitted their guilt during their first court appearance before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad on June 2. Both are serving sentences for serious crimes, including assault and robbery.
Rokovesu and Koroivuki made their escape from the facility around 8 PM on May 28. Following extensive search efforts, Rokovesu was apprehended in Newtown, while Koroivuki was captured in Nakasi. They are scheduled for sentencing on June 23.
The other two inmates, Selema Nasilivata, 29, and Saula Luveitasau, 26, were unable to enter pleas due to being deemed unfit at the time. They were captured subsequently in separate locations and will have the opportunity to plead on June 16.
This incident has raised significant concerns regarding prison security in Fiji, echoing similar discussions surrounding previous escape attempts. The authorities are urged to reconsider the effectiveness of their safety protocols within correctional facilities. The swift recapture of the inmates involved demonstrates the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with law enforcement, which is crucial in maintaining public safety.
The expected legal proceedings will not just address the immediate concerns but also contribute to ongoing discussions about necessary reforms in the correctional system aimed at enhancing security and preventing future incidents. There’s hope that this situation may lead to improvements in the management and safety of inmates, benefiting both the prison system and the community at large.
