Fiji’s President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu has publicly expressed gratitude towards Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Brigadier General Ro Jone Kalouniwai for his steadfast leadership following the 2022 General Elections, which saw the emergence of a new government. This acknowledgment came during an address to 156 peacekeeping soldiers who have recently returned from Iraq.

In his speech, President Lalabalavu commended Commander Kalouniwai for maintaining unity within his team amid the political transition. “I want to also thank the Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai for his steadfast leadership in leading the military,” he stated, reflecting on the importance of allowing the electoral process to unfold, which ultimately led to the government in power today.

This year marks Fiji’s 55th anniversary of independence, and President Lalabalavu noted the significant changes the country has undergone, especially in its political landscape and multicultural dynamics. He emphasized the commitment to working collaboratively moving forward.

Responding to the President’s remarks, Commander Kalouniwai remarked, “We just did our job,” highlighting the military’s dedication to upholding their responsibilities and respecting the will of the people. He also took the opportunity to thank his soldiers for their service in peacekeeping operations in Iraq, which concluded following a United Nations decision to withdraw troops.

This event signifies a pivotal moment in Fiji’s history, showcasing the military’s role in reinforcing democratic values during times of change. The cooperative spirit expressed between the political leadership and the military inspires hope for a harmonious and progressive future for the nation.
