The Public Rental Board (PRB) has reinforced its commitment to ensuring safe living environments by introducing new clauses in its tenancy agreements, declaring all PRB properties as drug-free zones and strictly prohibiting any form of violence. According to General Manager Timoci Naleba, this decisive move is an effort to support the national fight against Fiji’s escalating drug crisis.
Naleba acknowledges that some PRB flats were previously involved in drug-related activities but emphasizes that such behavior will no longer be tolerated. “You’ll be immediately evicted from your flat if you are found to be in possession or engage in activities related to drugs,” he stated, asserting a zero-tolerance policy for drug use and violence.
To further safeguard its communities and enhance youth engagement, PRB is collaborating with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This partnership will provide access to sporting facilities, aiming to offer young people constructive alternatives and steer them away from negative influences.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the PRB to maintain peaceful living environments. Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa had previously highlighted that breaches of lease agreements concerning drug use result in eviction. This strict enforcement policy aligns with past actions where over five families were evicted due to their involvement in illegal activities like drug use and violence.
The PRB’s proactive stance includes improvements in security measures, such as hiring additional security personnel and installing surveillance systems to deter criminal activities. These efforts aim to enhance the safety of residents while supporting outreach programs that address the broader social issues of drug abuse and violence.
Through continuous community engagement and diligent enforcement of regulations, the PRB is working towards creating secure and supportive environments for families. There is optimism that these actions will lead to safer communities and a better quality of life for all residents. This approach not only addresses immediate concerns but also lays the groundwork for sustainable, long-term solutions.
