The Fiji Police Force is once again emphasizing the severe risks associated with excessive alcohol consumption, which can lead to grave injuries or fatalities. This cautionary statement follows a tragic incident involving two men who lost their lives in a road accident in Waitolu, Naitasiri, on Wednesday afternoon.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the victims, aged 21 and 45, were reportedly intoxicated and engaged in a physical altercation that escalated onto the main road, where they were struck by a bus driven by a 30-year-old man. The younger victim was declared dead at Vunidawa Hospital, and the older victim succumbed to his injuries at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital the following morning.
SSP Divuana noted that this accident might have been prevented had the victims’ judgment not been impaired by alcohol. He highlighted that overconsumption of alcohol poses a serious risk to all individuals on the road, including drivers, passengers, riders, and pedestrians.
“We urge everyone to be responsible,” SSP Divuana stated. “It is crucial to recognize that our actions have consequences. Two families are now grieving their losses so close to Christmas. We have consistently warned about the dangers of alcohol influence, which hinders reaction times and sound decision-making regarding safety.” He affirmed that while road safety stakeholders will continue to advocate for awareness, the responsibility ultimately lies with individuals to heed these warnings.
Currently, the national road death toll stands at 58, a decrease from 74 fatalities during the same period last year, suggesting a potential improvement in road safety awareness, yet underscoring the need for continued vigilance.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of moderation and responsible behavior during festivities, especially as the holiday season approaches, highlighting the need for individuals to prioritize safety for themselves and others on the road.
