The Fiji Police Force has issued a reminder to social media users about the necessity of exercising their freedom of expression responsibly. This follows the circulation of a viral video featuring an individual living abroad who allegedly incited violence and made hateful comments against particular communities. In response, Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the Criminal Investigation Department is actively investigating the incident.
Tudravu expressed concern over the alarming trend of cyberbullying, harassment, and hate speech that is increasingly dividing communities online. “I am urging social media users to exercise their freedom of speech responsibly,” he stated. The rising misuse of social media has prompted authorities to partner with the Online Safety Commission of Fiji, aiming to promote a safer online environment conducive to productive and positive interactions.
This warning echoes similar sentiments shared by various officials, including President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu and the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission.
