The Fiji Police Force is intensifying its efforts to combat drug cultivation, particularly marijuana, as highlighted by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu. He expressed a strong commitment to “join the dots” in their investigation to build cases against key figures involved in drug trafficking, focusing on the entire supply chain from cultivators to users.

Tudravu noted the alarming scale of marijuana cultivation in regions such as Kadavu, where recent operations have unveiled three tonnes of marijuana within a single month. He raised concerns about the financial implications of this illegal trade, emphasizing that illicit profits pose a significant threat to community well-being.

The police are not only working to identify and target cultivators but also investigating whether some of the drugs are being sold outside of Fiji. The approach emphasizes a holistic understanding of the drug market, aiming to disrupt the networks that support it. By focusing on future prevention, Tudravu aims to deter the next generation from engaging in drug cultivation, underscoring the community’s role in this fight.

This strategic initiative follows recent operations like Operation Sasamaki, which revealed over 31,000 marijuana plants across Kadavu and resulted in numerous arrests, including notable apprehensions like a village chief. Such significant law enforcement actions illustrate the police’s dedication to building a safer environment for Fiji’s citizens, demonstrating a positive trend towards reducing drug-related crime.

The ongoing collaboration between communities and law enforcement is crucial in addressing drug issues effectively, fostering a sense of optimism about the future. As police continue to dismantle illegal drug networks, the shared efforts between the authorities and the public offer hope for a healthier, drug-free Fiji.
