The Fiji Police Force is advocating for an increase in its budget allocation for the upcoming financial year to facilitate essential improvements and ongoing restructuring efforts. Policing Minister Ioane Naivalurua has highlighted that vital aspects of the police organization are currently underfunded, emphasizing the need for new capabilities to address the evolving challenges of modern policing effectively.

Naivalurua pointed out the critical role of having a well-equipped, well-resourced, and organized police force that can better protect citizens. He noted that the current financial constraints have hindered the full realization of the Force’s restructuring efforts. The Minister stated, “The focus is all about making sure we have a well-equipped, well-resourced, and organized police force.”

During meetings set for this week with Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad, the Fiji Police Force aims to discuss these pressing issues in detail and identify solutions. The Force’s budget submission underscores the necessity for critical capabilities, especially with rising concerns surrounding drug-related crimes and domestic violence cases.

Furthermore, there are ongoing efforts in the police force directed towards enhancing community relationships, recognizing that police visibility and engagement are key to effective law enforcement. Recent reports on crime rates indicate an alarming increase, with crime rates rising by 26 percent as of January 2025 compared to previous years.

This situation underscores the urgent need for support and resources to enable the Fiji Police Force to modernize and better serve the community. The proactive steps taken to address budgetary constraints signify a commitment to bolster public safety and community trust. The call for improved funding reflects a hopeful outlook that, through collaboration and strategic initiatives, the Force will enhance its capabilities to ensure a safer environment for all Fijians.
