The Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Sakeo Raikaci, has emphasized that the Fiji Police Force has determined, based on current assessments, that there is no immediate need to arm its officers. He stated that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will only participate in major drug enforcement operations when there is a clear imminent threat to police personnel.

Raikaci highlighted the ongoing collaboration between the Fiji Police and the RFMF, noting that this partnership has successfully facilitated major drug operations, leading to significant seizures and arrests. He expressed appreciation for the reassurance provided by Defense Minister Pio Tikoduadua regarding the RFMF’s readiness to assist when necessary.

However, the ACP made it clear that assistance from the military is not required for every drug case. Support will only be sought in situations where intelligence indicates that police officers may be at risk. He mentioned that the current arrangement is built on mutual trust and respect, functioning effectively within the framework of the law.

In addition to these measures, the Fiji Police Force is focusing on strengthening proactive strategies rather than merely reacting to incidents. Raikaci called for collaboration among non-government organizations, communities, and stakeholders to address the rise in drug-related activities and to seek practical solutions that can safeguard the younger generation from the dangers of drug use.

He underscored the importance of addressing the root causes of drug demand, stating that reducing demand is crucial in combating supply. This proactive approach, as outlined by ACP Raikaci, reflects a commitment to not only manage drug crimes but also to foster community resilience and support networks.

In summary, while the Fiji Police will not arm themselves at this time, their collaborative efforts and proactive strategies signal a commitment to reducing drug-related activities and increasing safety for their officers and the community. Positive engagement with local organizations represents a hopeful path forward in tackling the complex issue of drug abuse and trafficking.
