The Fiji Police Force has initiated a comprehensive review of the educational curriculum at the Fiji Police Academy’s School of Community Policing. This initiative marks a significant step in the police training and development framework, with the goal of improving the quality, consistency, and effectiveness of law enforcement services. Assistant Commissioner of Police Administration (ACP/A) Meli Sateki stated that this review aligns with Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu’s vision for advancing community policing practices.
Sateki emphasized that the department is undertaking a transformative shift in the way training is delivered. The new approach aims to better prepare community police officers for their roles, rather than solely reflecting their ranks, addressing previous challenges in on-the-job learning that potentially hindered service delivery.
The consultation process for this curriculum review began at the Nakasi Police Station, gathering insights from both senior and junior community policing officers, as well as retired officers and experts in the field. Notably, Dr. Eci Nabalarua, who created the Duavata Community Policing model, contributed to the discussions. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping the future of police training.
The overhauled curriculum is expected to enhance officers’ readiness for future promotions while also increasing their qualifications for various roles within the police force, thereby improving their ability to effectively serve the people of Fiji.
This reform effort aligns with the broader objectives of modernizing the Fiji Police Force and is consistent with the goals of the ‘Police Reset’ initiative, which focuses on leadership development, operational efficiency, and building trust within the community. With continued emphasis on these areas, there is a hopeful outlook for nurturing a safer and more cooperative relationship between law enforcement and the public. Such changes not only reaffirm the commitment to serving the community but also to actively engaging with citizens, fostering a foundation of trust essential for effective policing in Fiji.
