The Fiji Police Force is mourning the loss of a fellow officer who succumbed to injuries sustained during a traffic operation in Labasa. The unfortunate incident occurred on the night of December 6 while the 46-year-old officer was conducting a traffic stop on the Labasa–Nasekula Road. A truck, driven by a 45-year-old man, collided with two parked vehicles, resulting in the officer and another individual being struck.

Tragically, the officer was pinned beneath the truck and was urgently transported to Labasa Hospital, where he was treated for critical injuries but ultimately passed away early the following morning. The second victim remains hospitalized as investigations into the accident continue, with authorities planning to interview the truck driver involved.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu extended heartfelt condolences to the officer’s family, emphasizing the inherent dangers faced by law enforcement personnel daily. He highlighted the troubling trend of rising road accidents and fatalities in the region, calling on drivers and all road users to prioritize safety measures.

The Commissioner assured that the police organization is committed to supporting the family during this difficult time and will provide assistance as they prepare for the officer’s final rites. This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with maintaining public safety on the roads, and it underscores the need for a collective commitment to safer driving practices.
