The Fiji Police Force has reported the arrest of 76 individuals across the country this week for various drug-related offenses. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, emphasized that these arrests are occurring daily, highlighting the ongoing battle against drug misuse.
During this festive season, the police plan to intensify their operations. Among those arrested, the oldest offender was a 64-year-old man apprehended at the Ba fish market with seven sachets of dried leaves believed to be marijuana. Additionally, a 63-year-old carpenter was arrested at his home in Bua for possessing five green plants thought to be marijuana.
A 58-year-old man from Lautoka was found with a shopping bag containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana, along with over three thousand dollars suspected to be proceeds from crime. Other arrests include a 53-year-old farmer in Labasa and a 52-year-old bowser attendant in Wainibokasi, both found with various quantities of dried leaves thought to be marijuana.
Younger offenders included a 19-year-old farmer, arrested in Savusavu with five bags of dried leaves, and a 19-year-old female along with her friend, who were detained after an unpaid taxi fare led to the discovery of marijuana during a search.
The comprehensive strategy employed by the police includes stop searches, roadblocks, raids, and support from the K-9 Unit, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing community safety. The recent increase in arrests serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to combat drug-related crimes and protect public health.
