The Fiji Police Force held a solemn remembrance event this weekend to honor the twenty-six members who passed away in the past year, with ceremonies taking place in Suva, Labasa, and Lautoka. Families of the deceased officers from the Central, Eastern, Southern, and Headquarters Division gathered at the Nasova Police grounds to pay tribute to their service to the nation.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew officiated the Fiji Police Force 2024 Remembrance Day, reflecting on the significance of returning to where many began their policing careers. He expressed that it was a bittersweet moment to gather in remembrance of their fallen comrades while celebrating their enduring memories.
The Acting Commissioner acknowledged the sacrifices made by the families of the fallen officers, stating, “We thank you for selflessly sharing their time with us. Precious time that can never be recovered, and it is for that reason that we will forever be grateful for your unwavering support towards our careers.” He noted that while police officers signed up for the job’s demands, their families did not, emphasizing the sacrifices made on both sides.
Looking ahead, the Acting Commissioner reminded attendees of the approaching 150th anniversary of the Fiji Police Force, which will be celebrated on October 10th, 2024. He reflected on the various historical periods that have shaped the organization and the importance of learning from the past while focusing on present and future improvements.
During the ceremony in Nasova, eighteen members who died in the last year were particularly commemorated, highlighting their service and dedication to the force.
