Empowering Future Leaders: A New Era for Fiji's Police Force

Fiji Police Force Unveils New Leadership Workshop: A Game Changer?

The UK College of Policing has launched its inaugural Emerging Leaders Workshop specifically designed for officers in the Northern Division of the Fiji Police Force. This initiative focuses on elevating the leadership skills of Station Officers, Sergeants, and Corporals. The event concluded with remarks from Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Serupepeli Neiko, the Director of Training and Education, who emphasized the vital support from the UK in enhancing leadership capabilities within the Fiji Police Force.

SSP Neiko reflected on insights gained during a four-week International Leadership Programme in London, underlining the need for adaptive leadership. He remarked, “Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s about being fluid and applying the best practices according to the challenges at hand.”

During his address, he reiterated a key message from Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu about the importance of adhering to fundamental policing principles. He encouraged attendees to recognize their actions as supervisors and stressed the responsibility that comes with their ranks, stating, “The responsibility you bear should guide your decisions, especially as you enjoy the privileges of your rank.”

SSP Neiko conveyed optimism that the workshop would empower officers to enhance their leadership and management skills, enabling them to make informed decisions that positively affect their teams. He concluded his address by saying, “Leadership is not about you; it’s about those you lead. How you treat your team reflects your leadership.”

The College of Policing continues to implement training initiatives aimed at strengthening leadership skills throughout the Fiji Police Force, a significant move toward improved organizational effectiveness and community engagement.

Recent similar training programs by the UK College of Policing for middle supervisory officers in the Central and Western Divisions demonstrate a commitment to fostering leadership development at all levels. This proactive approach not only aims to uplift the Fiji Police Force but also contributes to enhancing safety and security within communities.

This increased focus on leadership training represents a hopeful development for the future of policing in Fiji, as empowered leaders are better positioned to tackle challenges and effectively guide their teams.
