The Fiji Police Force is on track to enhance its operational effectiveness within three months, as indicated by Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua in a recent parliamentary session. This development addresses concerns from Opposition MP Shalen Kumar regarding the government’s plan to manage the troubling rise in crime rates.
Naivalurua pointed to encouraging signs within crime statistics, noting a reduction in crime rates compared to the previous year. He outlined various strategic initiatives aimed at tackling crime, especially within identified high-risk areas known as “red spots.” The strategies entail proactive resource deployment, timely incident responses, and increased police visibility in these critical zones.
The police have dispatched special units to regions like Kadavu and Vanua Levu to combat drug-related crimes, and efforts are set to expand to other crime hotspots. Naivalurua highlighted the critical importance of fostering stronger relationships between the police and local communities to restore public trust in law enforcement.
A key element of this strategy involves the integration of advanced technological resources. The Fiji Police Force plans to enhance the use of CCTV technology and surveillance systems, enabling the gathering of substantial evidence for investigations and facilitating the swift apprehension of offenders.
Moreover, municipal councils are being urged to take on a more proactive role in ensuring safety within their areas, reinforcing community-supported crime prevention initiatives. Naivalurua emphasized the complexity of modern policing, stating, “This is a challenging task that requires mobility and the capacity to move things effectively forward.”
Despite reports of rising crime statistics—a 26 percent increase in crime for January 2025, following a 27 percent overall rise in 2024—ongoing reform efforts signify a commitment to modernizing the police force. Past discussions have highlighted the need for a review of the outdated Police Act from 1965, which is seen as an obstacle to embracing new technologies and operational protocols.
