The Fiji Police Force is seeking to submit a budget for increased funding aimed at addressing significant personnel shortages, having lost over 500 officers in the past three years. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu noted that, while 1,138 officers have been recruited since 2022, the force’s overall numbers have dwindled due to high attrition rates caused by retirements, resignations, and unfortunate deaths.

Commissioner Tudravu explained that their response to this crisis includes preparations for their 2025/2026 budget submission, which will outline the need for financial support for reforms and restructuring efforts that will allow for an increase in manpower and resources to aid officers in their duties. Additionally, in an effort to enhance police visibility, they have also recruited special constables from previous recruitment drives who are eligible and have passed necessary screenings, including drug tests.

This recruitment aligns with earlier announcements about the pressing need for more personnel in the face of an increased workload, where current statistics show one officer now has to serve over 200 Fijians. The proactive measures taken by the Fiji Police Force demonstrate a commitment to maintaining public safety despite these challenges and highlight ongoing recruitment drives as part of their strategy to ensure community safety.

The emphasis on strengthening police manpower not only addresses the current personnel crisis but also signals a hopeful outlook for enhancing public safety strategies moving forward. By boosting officer numbers and implementing focused reform initiatives, the Fiji Police Force is working toward a future where they can better serve and protect the community, maintaining trust and effectiveness in law enforcement.
