Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has addressed increasing public concerns about the reduced visibility of police officers and the community’s expectation for a more substantial police presence following recent recruitment efforts. During a media briefing at the Fiji Police Force headquarters in Nasinu, he revealed that although 1,138 officers were recruited between 2022 and 2024, the police force has faced a net loss of 521 officers due to factors such as retirements, resignations, and deaths.

Mr. Tudravu emphasized the importance of stability within the police force, stating, “As part of my intent of achieving stability and growth, we continue to look inwards to stabilize our human resources.” The recruitment of special constables from eligible candidates has been part of the response to the mounting demands for enhanced police visibility. This move aims not only to fill the gaps left by departing officers but also to better serve the community, where current data reflects that one officer is responsible for the safety of over 200 citizens.

In conjunction with ongoing recruitment efforts, Commissioner Tudravu announced that the 2025/2026 budget will include proposals aimed at reforming and restructuring the police force. This is crucial in enabling a boost in manpower and operational support, aligning with the broader objectives to tackle the personnel shortages faced by the police.

The recent discussions around the challenges of police visibility and personnel attrition echo ongoing sentiments within the Fiji Police Force regarding the need for enhanced community engagement and a return to foundational policing strategies. The proactive measures undertaken signal a hopeful outlook for the future of law enforcement in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of restoring public trust and confidence in the police force.

Overall, this initiative reflects a strong commitment to improving public safety, with a focus on maintaining effective law enforcement practices. The collaborative effort between the police and the community could lead to stronger relationships, increased accountability, and ultimately, a safer environment for all Fijians.
