The Fiji Police Force is currently grappling with a serious internal issue as 21 officers are under investigation for their alleged involvement in drug-related activities this year. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has affirmed that the department adheres to a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any officer connected to drug trafficking networks.

As the investigation continues, the implicated officers are on various types of leave—some are receiving full pay while others are on reduced or no compensation based on the severity of the allegations. Commissioner Tudravu’s decisive approach showcases a commitment to accountability and assures that any form of misconduct will be dealt with promptly.

This situation is reflective of previous announcements from police leadership emphasizing the critical need for integrity within the force. Recently, Acting Commissioner Juki Fong Chew reiterated that officers found engaging in corrupt activities would face serious disciplinary measures, including potential criminal charges. He has actively encouraged the community to participate in reporting suspicious behaviors, ensuring that confidentiality is maintained for all submissions.

Acknowledging the public’s concerns about the management of such misconduct, the police leadership continues to release monthly crime statistics to demonstrate their dedication to law enforcement and ethical practices within the department.

Although this issue presents a challenge, it also offers a unique opportunity for the Fiji Police Force to reaffirm its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the trust of the community it serves. There is hope that the outcome of these investigations will not only result in appropriate disciplinary actions but also contribute to bolstering ethical standards among law enforcement personnel.

This firm approach against drug-related misconduct is vital in rebuilding trust between the police force and the public, ultimately reinforcing its role in law enforcement and effective community service.
