Police officers in Fiji are being reminded that they must not promote reconciliation in cases of domestic and sexual violence, as all reports should be rigorously investigated. Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu emphasized that law enforcement personnel who advise victims to settle matters through family, faith, or cultural means instead of utilizing the justice system will face disciplinary action.

This declaration follows concerning allegations that officers have been prioritizing reconciliation over comprehensive investigations. Shamima Ali, coordinator of the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, highlighted that this troubling practice has resurfaced even after years of advocacy aimed at changing such narratives. She expressed frustration over the continued tendency to normalize resolving instances of abuse outside of legal frameworks.

Ali pointed out an alarming practice where police liaison officers report back to senior officials stating that cases have been resolved through reconciliation, raising questions about whether proper protocols are being followed. “Who reconciled them? We did. That’s not their business,” she noted, calling for a more structured approach to handling such sensitive cases.

In response, Commissioner Tudravu reiterated that proper training is being enforced at the Police Academy and through divisional workshops, underscoring the importance of investigating all sexual offenses and domestic violence cases. He urged those within the force who witness any such breaches of protocol to report them, reinforcing a culture of accountability.

Acknowledging the persistent challenges in addressing this issue, Tudravu highlighted the critical need for ongoing training to ensure that officers respond accurately and appropriately to complaints of abuse. This commitment reinforces Fiji’s efforts to enhance the justice system’s response to domestic and sexual violence, ultimately achieving a safer environment for victims.
