The Fiji Police Force’s Mpaisa Taskforce has recently charged two women in separate incidents related to financial fraud. A 23-year-old woman from Rakiraki is accused of unlawfully acquiring $336 through the Mpaisa platform on January 31, 2023. Investigations revealed that she received funds that were mistakenly deposited into her account and subsequently withdrew the money despite not being entitled to it. The matter was reported to the Valelevu Police Station, leading to her arrest. She is currently in custody and will appear in the Sigatoka Magistrate Court today.

In another case, a 44-year-old caregiver from Dreketi Feeder Road in Lautoka has also been charged with obtaining financial advantage. It is alleged that she dishonestly obtained $250 through the Mpaisa platform, using a Facebook account created for her husband—a Disk Jockey—without his knowledge. Through this account, she advertised services that were never actually rendered, collecting money from unsuspecting clients. This incident was reported to the Nabua Police Station, resulting in her arrest. She too is expected to appear in court today.

These recent cases illustrate ongoing issues of financial fraud associated with digital banking transactions and the potential misuse of platforms like Mpaisa. The Fiji Police are urging the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to help combat such fraudulent practices. The enforcement actions taken by the police serve as a strong reminder of the importance of community awareness in protecting against financial exploitation.

In summary, the efforts of the Fiji Police to address these fraudulent activities are commendable and reflect a commitment to safeguarding the community. As law enforcement continues to crack down on such crimes, it offers hope that increased awareness and proactive reporting can help mitigate risks in the digital financial landscape.
