Fiji Police have reported the arrest of 23 motorists for drunk driving during intensified road operations on Boxing Day. This proactive measure aimed to enhance road safety over the festive season.
In a statement, police officials revealed that 19 of the arrests occurred along the Suva corridor, where officers performed a total of 171 Random Breath Tests (RBTs). In addition, four drivers were apprehended in Nadi for similar offenses.
Authorities have announced that these operations will persist throughout the holiday period, with an increase in police presence on major highways and in busy urban areas. They are urging drivers to take precautions by planning ahead, appointing designated drivers, and refraining from driving after consuming alcohol, as the risk of accidents during the festive season remains a significant concern.
The continued efforts by the police to curb drunk driving are a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on the roads. With these initiatives, authorities hope to reduce the number of festive-season accidents and promote a safer environment for all road users.
