The Fiji Police Force is seeking to strengthen its partnership with the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs in response to rising social challenges in the nation. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has highlighted that many criminal cases involve iTaukei individuals, underscoring the importance of collaboration with this ministry and the iTaukei Affairs Board.

Tudravu praised both the Ministry and the Great Councils of Chiefs for their ongoing efforts to fill vacancies in traditional titles, noting that these governance structures play a crucial role in ensuring societal stability. He remarked, “There’s a lot of influence in the iTaukei structure, and this is one of the strategic frontlines to partner with the iTaukei Affairs.”

He emphasized that addressing crime and social issues requires a united effort from various sectors, including other ministries and institutions. This is in line with trends observed within the Fiji Police Force, which has previously emphasized community safety, transparency, and the importance of community policing.

Additionally, discussions around initiatives like the Police Reset Strategy, designed to professionalize the force and enhance public confidence, further reflect this collaborative spirit. The re-establishment of community-based Crime Prevention Committees is also seen as essential for promoting public participation in crime prevention efforts.

The focus on partnership and community engagement presents an optimistic outlook for Fiji, suggesting that through collective actions, there is potential for lowering crime rates and creating a more secure environment for all citizens. By addressing social issues from multiple angles, not only can policing improve, but a stronger sense of community and safety can be cultivated.
